Sunday Times bestselling doctor ‘donates’ website on World Menopause Day

The doctor behind the largest menopause clinic in the world and one of Women-Space’s many high-ranking associates, has ‘donated’ her new website to support World Menopause Day this month.

Dr Louise Newson, author of a Sunday Times bestseller on the subject and guest expert on numerous TV and radio programmes, relaunched her menopause-focused website as a gift to all women to coincide with the annual event organised by the International Menopause Society.

The site – www.balance-menopause.com - contains over 2,500 pieces of evidence-based information on the hormone deficiency and its effects, including booklets, leaflets, podcasts and videos, which have all been checked by Louise for medical accuracy.

Louise, whose world-renowned clinic is based in Stratford-upon-Avon, is one of dozens of high-ranking leaders and change-makers supporting the newly launched Women-Space consultancy which was set up this autumn by one of the UK’s leading academics, Prof Christina Hughes.

Dr Newson explained: “When working as a GP, word got out that I was different and knew exactly how to help people affected by their menopause symptoms. I was inundated, but realised that even if I opened a specialist menopause clinic in every city in the UK it still wouldn’t meet the demand.”

So five years ago she set up the Menopause Doctor website, along with an app enabling women to access information about the menopause, share their symptoms and use their findings to access the correct treatments.

That initial website has now been adapted and enhanced and was relaunched as www.balance-menopause.com  to coincide with World Menopause Day on October 18.

“It is essential that women are empowered with information,” said Louise. “Currently around 20% of women give up their jobs as a result of menopausal symptoms including anxiety, memory problems and fatigue and too many women are needlessly suffering. I hope this website and app will change this!”

“The menopause affects all women, yet only the minority worldwide are currently able to receive evidence-based treatment. The menopause is a long-term hormone deficiency with health risks. Women with low hormone levels have an increased risk of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and dementia. All these diseases are less likely in women who take HRT which replaces their missing hormones.

“The free balance app – www.balance-app.com – has already been downloaded by over 360,000 women across the world  It enables them to learn more about  and monitor their symptoms, be part of a community, take part in various health experiments and create a health report to share with their healthcare professional. “

Prof Christina Hughes added: “Louise is a real powerhouse. Her book Preparing for your Perimenopause and Menopause is a top ten Sunday Times bestseller. She has set up several menopause-focused chartes and is involved in research with a number of UK universities. To have her on board as an associate is a huge blessing to us at Women-Space. Her insight, knowledge and sheer energy are an inspiration to us all.”
